She sat there and like many of this generation, decided to pull out her phone in search of an answer. One of our potica bakers from the National Home, Amanda, was explaining to my cousin Jim and me, that despite repeated att empts, she was not able to roll her R’s. Amanda was telling us that her friend, Jim’s daughter Jennifer, was trying to expand Amanda’s Slovenian vocabulary. Jennifer was texting Amanda daily with random new words. If the constant onslaught of new words was not enough of a challenge, Jim and I were now helping to make things worse by correcting Amanda’s Indiana-infl uenced pronunciation.


The conversation among the three of us, moved on about if rolling R’s was an inheritable genetic trait or not, or if it was possible to learn how to roll them.
